Dr. Rafey served as a full-time faculty in Nephrology and Hypertension at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, and at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio, USA. From 2011 to 2023, Dr. Rafey worked as a Sr. Consultant in Nephrology and Hypertension and Director of the BP Clinics Program before moving to the University of Chicago Medicine.
He has been a co-investigator on four landmark trials in hypertension and kidney disease (AASK, AASK Cohort Study, CRIC, and SPRINT trials) sponsored by the National Institute of Health, USA, and has published more than forty papers in peer-reviewed journals. He has co-authored chapters on hypertension in several textbooks including ‘Schrier's Diseases of the
Kidney’ a leading textbook of nephrology.
In addition to taking care of patients with chronic kidney disease and end-stage kidney disease, Dr. Rafey has expertise in the clinical application of the newest technology in hypertension management including 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, home BP monitoring, and central BP monitoring to optimize blood pressure control and individualize patient care in hypertensive patients.
He joined the University of Chicago as a full-time faculty in the Department of Medicine (Nephrology) In August 2023. He is also part of the ASH Comprehensive Hypertension Center at the University of Chicago.
