Summary
- Mohamad S. Jaafar, MD, FACS, FAAP, earned his Bachelor of Science and Medical Doctor degrees from the American University of Beirut where he also completed his ophthalmology residency. Dr. Jaafar then pursued Clinical Fellowships in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus at Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and Texas Children’s Hospital, Baylor College of Medicine, and a second residency in Ophthalmology at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC.
In 1983, Dr. Jaafar established the Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Service at King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He moved to Washington, DC, in 1986 to join Children’s National Hospital, where he served as Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology from 1995 to 2019. He is currently Professor of Ophthalmology and Pediatrics at The George Washington University. He holds the title of Dorothy, Jay, Kara, and Mark Weinstein Professor and Chairman Emeritus of Children’s National’s Department of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Jaafar serves on the boards of the International Strabismological Association, the Prevention of Blindness Society of Metropolitan Washington, and the Aid Association for the Blind of the District of Columbia. Dr. Jaafar is President of the Costenbader Society, President-Elect of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus & Past-Chairman of the Advisory Board of the International Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Council.
Dr. Jaafar is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and has received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, the Senior Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Professional Achievement Award from the Prevention of Blindness Society of the Washington Metropolitan Area, the Sauber Award for Medical Excellence from Children’s National Hospital and three Golden Apple Awards for Teacher of the Year.
