Summary
- In 1983, Dr. Jaafar established the Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Service at the King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He moved to Washington, DC, in 1986, became Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Children’s National Health System in 1995 and is currently The Dorothy, Jay, Kara and Mark Weinstein Professor and Chief of Ophthalmology. He is Professor of Ophthalmology and Pediatrics at the George Washington University.
Dr Jaafar is a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a member of numerous professional associations. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, the Children’s Eye Foundation, the Council of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Prevention of Blindness Society of Metropolitan Washington and the Aid Association for the Blind of the District of Columbia, and the Editorial Board of a number of medical journals.
Dr Jaafar is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and has received the Senior Achievement Award of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Life-time Achievement Award of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, the Professional Achievement Award of the Prevention of Blindness Society of the Washington Metropolitan Area, the Sauber Award for Medical Excellence, three Golden Apple Awards for Teacher of the Year and many commendations, medals and recognition awards. He has been consistently listed as Best Pediatric Ophthalmologist in America’s Top Doctors, Washingtonian, and many others.
Dr Jaafar has published extensively & given scores of presentations in national & international meetings on a variety of topics covering, among others, strabismus in adults and children, amblyopia, ocular tumors and pediatric glaucoma and cataract. His opinion is sought in the management of infantile glaucoma and difficult strabismus conditions.
