Summary

  • I am a Training and Supervising Analyst and Faculty member at the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis. I also am on Faculty at the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California. lead scholarly seminars and make original paper presentations in the Bay Area and around the country on psychoanalytic theory and clinical issues related to long-term psychotherapy. I have served on editorial boards of the leading psychoanalytic journals, and have won three national awards for psychoanalytic writing.

    I have an unusual educational history that includes a master's degree in English Literature from UC Berkeley, and the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar fellowship at the Stanford University School of Medicine. For the RWJ fellowship I studied the recent history of psychiatric diagnosis and published a lead article in 1993 in the American Journal of Psychiatry on that subject.

    I am able to speak on topics such as health care reform, boundary violations in clinical settings, various issues related to psychotherapy, psychiatric diagnosis, and psychiatric practice. I am able to write on a variety of subjects (medicine, the humanities, and popular culture).
