Summary

  • I obtained my Bachelor of Science in biology from the University of Connecticut in 1985 after which I attended the University of Rhode Island, where I obtained my PhD in microbiology in 1990. My military service began in January 1981, when I enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve. I was originally commissioned as an infantry officer in 1983 and spent from 1981-1991 as a reservist in that branch. After completing my doctorate, I entered active duty as a medical service corps officer and came to the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) for post-doctoral research. From 1991-1994, I worked in the Department of Communicable Diseases and Immunology, researching vaccines against _Shigella flexneri_. In 1994, I came off active duty and attended medical school at Albany Medical College in New York on a Health Professions Scholarship. Upon graduating in 1998, I returned to active duty and completed a residency in internal medicine at Brooke Army Medical Center (1998-2001) followed by an infectious diseases fellowship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center (2001-2004). Upon completing my fellowship, I served as a staff physician, first at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center (2004-2011) and then at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (2011-2013). I also served as the Deputy Commander for Clinical Services (Chief of Medical Staff) at Kimbrough Ambulatory Care Center, Ft. Meade (2013-2015), Director of the Bacterial Diseases Branch at the WRAIR (2015-2016), and then as the Deputy Commander of the WRAIR (2016-2017). I have deployed twice as a battalion surgeon, once to Iraq with the 10th MTN DIV (2005-2006) and once to Afghanistan with the 82d ABN DIV (2010). Upon retiring from the Regular Army in 2017, I began employment with the Department of Veterans Affairs, where I have served as Chief of Medicine (2017-2020) and currently serve as Deputy Chief of Staff, Designated Education Officer, and Facility Research Coordinator at the VAMC in Martinsburg, West Virginia.
