Summary
- Michael R. Yochelson, MD, MBA is the Chief Medical Officer for Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Prior to taking that role he was at MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington, DC, where he worked for over a decade, initially as the Medical Director of their brain injury program and later as their VPMA/CMO. He is a highly trained and qualified board-certified neurologist and physiatrist. He was the founding program director of the Brain Injury Medicine Fellowship which he started at MedStar NRH in 2009 and has supported the creation of brain injury and spinal cord injury fellowships at Shepherd Center.
Dr. Yochelson is a graduate of the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and completed his residency training at the National Capital Consortium.
Dr. Yochelson holds the rank of adjunct professor of rehabilitation medicine at Emory University. He served as chair of the Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee on Prosthetics and Special Disabilities Programs, a congressionally-appointed position for 6 years. Dr. Yochelson previously served on the board of directors for the Brain Injury Association of Washington, D.C. and was an active member of the Brain Injury Association of Maryland. He also is currently a member of the Engagement & Inclusion Committee in the American Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (AAPM&R) and serves on the Georgia Behavioral Health Reform & Innovation Commission.
Dr. Yochelson has received numerous awards, including the Outstanding Educator Award in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Georgetown University/MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital (2008) and the Edward A. Eckenhoff Leadership Award, MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital (2009). He has been recognized as one of the "Top Rated Doctors" in Northern Virginia (2010 & 2011) and as a "Top Doctor" by Castle Connolly (2011-2017).
