Summary
- I conduct medical research in health information technology applied to primary care, geriatrics, and clinical practice. I study the roles and effects of health information on behaviors, physicians' practices, clinical outcomes, and the organization and delivery of health care, especially for older patients. I do not conduct research in basic biomedical sciences. I am not looking for a job as a practicing internist. I enjoy innovative work and creativity in health care, including useful applications of clinical decision support and telecommunications.
Since our behaviors are a key to our health, changing behavior (behavioral medicine) is one of the essential strategies in medical practice. We need to find more effective ways to foster healthful behaviors among patients and their healthcare professionals. Health technologies can help us in certain ways, but we need to know more about the meaning and implications of data generated by new technologies. We also need to find out what will motivate us to become healthier as individuals, communities, and populations.
A scientist's business is to generate and disseminate knowledge, for the global benefit of humankind. My primary interest is the transformation of knowledge into useful, usable products and healthful behaviors, to improve efficiency, our connections to each other, our environments, and the quality of our lives.
