Summary
- I am Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Neurology. My major interest is research in stroke and migraine. My research training took place at M.I.T. where my research in migraine led to the development of the CGRP receptor antagonists. My lab discovered and introduced the concept of the trigeminovascular system as a final common path for headache pain and proposed neuropeptides as targets for therapy. My lab also showed a mechanism of action for the ergot alkaloids that largely replaced the vasoconstrictor theories regarding their action. For this I won the Brain Prize from the Lundbeck Foundation and presented by the Crown Prince of Denmark. This is the largest prize given in neuroscience and 1.5 million Danish Kroner was shared with 3 other investigators from Sweden, Denmark and Australia. My research in stroke laid the basis for using nitric oxide targeting drugs for therapy. That therapeutic application is just beginning.
