Summary

  • I am a Professor of Medicine and Clinical Pharmacy at the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine and Director of the Endocrinology and Diabetes Practice at the University of Colorado Hospital. I am board certified in Internal Medicine (1980) and Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes (1983). I attended the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) on an athletic scholarship (football) and graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1974 with a BS in Chemistry. I obtained my medical degree from Tulane Medical School in 1977. I did my Internal Medicine Internship and Residency (1977-1980) and Fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism (1980-1982) at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado. I spent 20 years in the US Army, during which I was the Chief of Endocrinology at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center from 1993-1997 and served as the Endocrinology Consultant to the Surgeon General from 1994-1997. I retired from the US Army in 1997 and joined the faculty at the University of Colorado. I am a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of The Endocrine Society, The American Diabetes Association (ADA), The American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR), The American Thyroid Association (ATA) and the American Medical Association (AMA). I am primarily a clinician, managing patients 5 days a week with general Endocrinology disorders (Diabetes Mellitus, Thyroid Disease, Metabolic Bone Disease, Parathyroid Disease, Adrenal Disease, Gonadal Disorders, Pituitary Disease and Lipid Disorders). My primary research interests include novel approaches to the management of Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

I served as the faculty representative of the Endocrine Ambassador Program in Ethiopia in March - April 2014. See my blog: mcdermottethiopia.blogspot.com.
