- Dr. Michael Makover is an internal medicine physician with a subspecialties in rheumatology, lipidology, medical ethics and preventive medicine. He graduated from the Johns Hopkins University, where he was elected to a Phi Beta Kappa. He is based in New York, NY. He completed his medical education at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1968 and pursued multiple residencies in internal medicine at institutions including Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, the Hospital for Special Surgery and the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Makover has multiple publications focusing on cardiovascular disease and its management, which have been cited by other publications. He showed that atherosclerosis is remarkably preventable and controllable if treated more broadly, earlier and more intensively than guidelines recommend. He is the Chief Medical Officer of the Joint Industry Board of the Electrical Industry, a non-profit, self-funded administrator for the benefit plan for Local 3 of the IBEW Union and its contractors. He is the founding CEO and Medical Director of its medical department, where bureaucracy is minimized and doctors see only 5 - to 8 patients in an eight hour day, allowing time for comprehensive care of patients. He has written on healthcare economics and against the corporatization of medicine. He also teaches on medical ethics at NYU College of Arts and Sciences. He has been a professor of medicine for 47 years and is proud to have been a leader in the passage of the Clean Indoor Air Act banning smoking indoors
