- Michael C. Levin, M.D., is the inaugural Saskatchewan Multiple Sclerosis Clinical Research Chair and Professor of Neurology & Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Saskatchewan.
Dr. Levin received his Bachelor’s of Science degree in chemistry with special honors at the George Washington University and his medical degree at the Pennsylvania State University. He attained basic neuroscience training with Drs. Max Cowan and Paul Sawchenko at The Salk Institute. Dr. Levin completed his residency in neurology at The New York Hospital/Cornell Medical Center – Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Drs. Fred Plum and Jerry Posner mentored him during his residency including as chief resident. He completed his multiple sclerosis post-doctoral fellowship in the Neuroimmunology Branch as NIH, where he worked with Drs. Henry McFarland and Steve Jacobson.
Subsequently, Dr. Levin was recruited by the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Memphis, Tennessee, where he moved up the ranks to become Professor of Neurology and Anatomy/Neurobiology as well as Chief, Neurology Service at the VA. During his tenure as Chief, the neurology service was one of the most productive in the country. Dr. Levin has received more than 25 awards for academic excellence and his research into the pathogenesis of MS includes work in molecular mimicry and neurodegeneration. He has maintained federal funding for almost 20 years. His work has been published in The New England Journal of Medicine, Nature Medicine, Annals of Neurology, Neurology and the Journal of Comparative Neurology. Further, his research has received national recognition from the American Academy of Neurology & the Society for Neuroscience.
Dr. Levin is married to his lovely wife for more than 25 years, Dr. Audrey Zucker-Levin, an academic physical therapist. He has two strappingly handsome sons. Dr. Levin is an avid sailor and scuba diver and an enthusiast skier.
