Summary
- Mike Johnston, MD is a Surgical Resident and Research Fellow who works with the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center for his surgical training and research fellowship in pediatric liver tumors.
Mike believes that through understanding the biochemical processes within pediatric liver tumors, hepatocellular carcinoma and hepatoblastoma, we can harness alternative chemotherapy regimens to aid in the treatment of cancer and reduce post-oncology treatment developmental delays. Additionally through advancing the cutting edge of surgery via research and advanced training, he knows we can continue to progress medicine and provide better care for patients.
Dr. Johnston landed his research experience at CCHMC where he has established subcutaneous and orthotropic patient derived xenograft models of hepatoblastoma and hepatocellular carcinoma. These are being utilized to research the biochemical effects of currently approved medications undergoing randomized control trials clinically. Additionally, he has been studying clinical surgical outcomes, establishing local tumor registries, and developing predictive models for patients.
Mike is an Ohio State Medical Board licensed physician, who received his Doctor of Medicine from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 2017. There he served as elected Class President for the largest medical school class in the nation and established local community development funds. He also received a merit based scholarship of $130,000 to cover his full medical school tuition. In residency he has now completed two years of training, where he was awarded the 2019 Department of Surgery Best Teaching Resident and has served as
the Department Medical Student Liaison.
Mike additionally holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Neurobiology and Physiology from Purdue University, where he also minored in Chemistry.
