He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Wake Forest University. He completed his general surgery training at the University of Virginia and transplant surgery training at the University of Minnesota. He was director of pancreas and islet transplantation at the University of Louisville until 2019, when he created Vanguard Surgical to focus on gastroparesis and chronic pancreatitis patients. He has placed more gastric stimulators than any surgeon world-wide (more than 2,000) and has performed more than 1,500 laparoscopic pyloroplasties for gastroparesis. He performs total pancreatectomy with islet auto transplantation for chronic pancreatitis.
