Summary

  • Michael G. Baraga, MD, a sports medicine specialist and surgeon, is an associate professor with UHealth Sports Medicine Institute, a division of the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. The division is the official sports medicine provider for the Miami Hurricanes and Miami Marlins.

A native of Puerto Rico, Dr. Baraga graduated from the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus. He then went on to earn his medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus. He completed an internship and residency in Orthopaedic Surgery right here in Miami at Jackson Memorial Hospital/Jackson Medical Center. Most recently, he completed his fellowship in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh where he worked with athletes of all levels, from local high schools to the Pittsburgh Steelers, among others.

Dr. Baraga specializes in knee and shoulder surgery, including ACL reconstruction with all graft types, including the quadriceps tendon graft. He also specializes in ACL revision surgery, knee dislocations, and patellar instability surgery. His research focus has been on ACL injuries, including work on ACL graft healing, treatment of partial tears, and individualized surgery.

A self-proclaimed “weekend warrior,” Dr. Baraga understands the frustration arising from injuries that prevent patients from participating in the activities they enjoy. He believes each patient should be treated as an individual, by taking into account his or her personal goals. By incorporating them into the treatment plan, he feels he can work together with his patients to get them back to their full potential.

Dr. Baraga also serves as Team Physician for the University of Miami Men's and Women's Basketball Teams, Women's Soccer Team, and the Miami Marlins. He is also Director of the Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship Program and Associate Orthopaedic Residency Program Director.
