Summary
- Dr. Crittenden earned his BS in 1974 at Notre Dame then earned a MD from Georgetown in 1979.
He trained in general surgery at Howard University until 1984 then completed a trauma/critical care fellowship at the Maryland Shock-Trauma Unit in 1985. From 1985-87 he was a Thoracic Resident at the University of Toronto followed by a Senior Staff Fellowship in Cardiac Surgery at NIH.
In 1989 he joined Howard’s Surgical Department as an Assistant Professor. In 1991 he was promoted to be Chief of Cardiothoracic Service.
In 1993 he joined the Cardiac Service at VA Boston, Brigham and Women's and the Harvard Medical School. At the VA, he served as the SICU Chief from 1995-2006 and as Acting Chief of Cardiac Surgery from 2007-9. During his time in Boston the Cardiac Service won two Center of Excellence Awards.
In 2009 he joined the VA St Louis as Chief of Surgery tasked to build a new Cardiac Service. He became an Associate Professor at Washington University.
He has served as a voting member to the FDA’s Circulatory Device Advisory Panel. He was a member of an AHA Study Section. He has co-authored original articles, abstracts, posters, and book chapters. He has reviewed manuscripts for academic journals and served on the editorial board of the Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
He has focused his scholarship on thoracic trauma, myocardial preservation, vascular biology, postoperative cerebral function, and patient safety. He shares patents for a mobile device allowing for the warm perfusion of donor organs.
From 2009-12 he rebuilt the Surgery Service by focusing on patient safety, starting a surgical ICU service, and improving collaboration in the OR. Surgical volume doubled including complex thoracic, abdominal, and vascular operations.
In 2015, surgeons at VA St Louis performed the first cardiac operation. Since then, over 300 Veterans have undergone cardiac surgery. In June 2017, Dr. Crittenden was selected to serve as the Chief of Staff at VA St Louis.
