Summary

  • From my earliest days watching my parents work as a small-town family doctor and nurse, I've been in awe of the immediate and lasting impact healthcare providers can have. I saw this in my father's practice and again when I first began specializing in pediatric infectious diseases: make the right diagnosis, and treatment can help sick kids get better.

Working with HIV-positive children at the onset of the AIDS crisis made it clear that children's health is entwined with the overall wellness of their family. So we implemented a program at Nationwide Children's to provide holistic care for the entire family, which significantly improved community health and received recognition from the federal government for its success. Participating in The Pediatric AIDS Clinical Trials Group allowed me to develop therapies that transformed HIV from a uniformly fatal disease to a manageable chronic disease.

My work with the American Academy of Pediatrics has provided a national and international platform to influence the care of children. It is a tremendous privilege to be involved in policy development that impacts the lives of children across the globe. Whether it's a worldwide effort through the AAP or an initiative closer to home in Ohio, I've seen how success comes about by working collaboratively and focusing on a few core issues:

    • adopting a population health approach that redefines healthcare payment models
    • structuring the medical home in a holistic way to provide better overall care while realizing better value for the patient and the healthcare system
    • recognizing the evolution taking place in healthcare financing by strategically using our
limited healthcare dollars more efficiently and effectively

My work keeps me busy, but it also takes me all over the world—I'm fortunate that some of my favorite family memories have been made traveling together.
