- Melissa Alvarez-Downing, MD, FACS, FASCRS, is a colorectal surgeon who received a bachelor of science in chemistry from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. She was awarded her medical degree from The Mount Sinai School of Medicine in 2005, and completed a general surgery residency at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey. She went on to pursue a clinical research fellowship in surgical oncology at the National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute, in Bethesda, Maryland. She then completed a clinical fellowship in colorectal surgery at Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston, Florida. She is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and New York Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, as well as a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons and National Hispanic Medical Association.
Dr. Alvarez-Downing has specific interests in laparoscopic surgery, inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer, diverticulitis, fecal incontinence and other disorders of the colon and rectum.
