  • Dr. Mauricio Villamar is an Assistant Professor of Neurology, Clinician Educator, at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

    He received his medical degree with highest honors from the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador. He then worked as a physician in the Amazon rainforest for one year. This was followed by a research fellowship in non-invasive brain stimulation at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Harvard Medical School.

    Dr. Villamar is a graduate of the neurology residency program at the University of Kentucky, where he obtained multiple research and teaching awards and was inducted to Alpha Omega Alpha. He then completed fellowships in epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He joined Brown Neurology in August, 2020.

    Dr. Villamar is board-certified in neurology and in epilepsy. He is a member of American Academy of Neurology, The Neurohospitalist Society, the American Epilepsy Society, and the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society. His research and clinical interests include hospital neurology, epilepsy, EEG, medical education, global neurology, and hospital quality and process improvement. As a Principal Investigator, he has received research grants from the American Epilepsy Society / Epilepsy Study Consortium, Alpha Omega Alpha, and the Epilepsy Research Center (EpiC) at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. For his quality and process improvement projects, Dr. Villamar has received awards and grants from the American Academy of Neurology, the American Neurological Association, the Partners HealthCare Center of Expertise in Medical Education, the Partners HealthCare Clinical Process Improvement Leadership Program (CPIP), and the Department of Neurology at the University of Kentucky. In addition to English, he is fluent in Spanish.
