- Dr. Mary Ellen Sweeney is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Emory University School of Medicine. After completing her medical school training at the Medical College of Ohio, she came to Atlanta for her residency in Internal Medicine at Emory followed by an appointment as a Clinical Research Associate in Nutrition and Metabolism at the Emory GCRC studying obesity, weight loss and cardiovascular disease. After completing an Endocrine Fellowship at Emory in Clinical Research and Lipid Metabolism working with Dr. W. Virgil Brown. She was in the inaugural group of physicians to be become a Diplomate of the American Board of Clinical Lipidology and was named a Fellow of the National Lipid Association.
She is an active clinical researcher and has been a site investigator on numerous large cardiovascular outcomes trials including ALLHAT, ACCORD, ASPREE and SPRINT. She is the author of many articles, book chapters and reviews and serves on the Editorial Boards of The American Journal of Clinical Lipidology and the Journal of Clinical and Translational Endocrinology.
She has been an advocate for nutrition and exercise through her work with the American Heart Association holding local, regional and national offices and is past President of the American Heart Association Southeast Affiliate. She was appointed to the Georgia House of Representative Task Force of the Study of Obesity in Georgia and was subsequently named AHA Advocate of the Year for her support of physical education in the schools.
She has participated in multiple Global Health Initiatives. She serves as faculty for the Emory Global Health Residency Scholarship program, traveling to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to collaborate in the training of fellows in the newly formed Endocrine Fellows Training Program. Most recently she was a Visiting Professor in the Emory Tibet Medical Sciences Program teaching Endocrinology .
