- I am a licensed as a child and adolescent clinical nurse specialist and a Psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner with a PhD in Philosophy. I obtained my Associates of Science in Nursing Degree at Quincy College, my Bachelors of Science in Nursing Degree, Masters of Science in Nursing Degree, and my PhD in Philosophy at Northeastern University in Boston.
As the director of the clinical trials program in pediatric psychopharmacology research at Massachusetts General Hospital for over 10 years, I was a co-investigator of 81 research studies of psychiatric disorders and medications. I continues to conduct psychiatric research studies in my private practice, South Shore Psychiatric Services in Hingham, MA. I have been a professor of psychopharmacology in the graduate nursing program at Northeastern University for many years and continues to train and mentor psychiatric nurse practitioners in my practice. In my previous role as the founder and CEO of STEP UP for BP Kids, a nonprofit organization, I was able to provide education, training and support for families of children and adolescents in addition to launching a summer camp for children and adolescents with bipolar disorder.
I am the author of a book entitled “Is Your Child Bipolar” and “Positive Parenting for Bipolar Kids” and was an expert consultant for a series of 30 books on child and adolescent psychopathology. I have 12 scientific publications in the area of psychopharmacology in children, adolescents and adults and I speak at conferences and education seminars across the country.
Dr. McDonnell is best known for her research and clinical work with children, adolescents and adults with ADHD, Anxiety and Mood Disorders. She specializes in the medication management of difficult to treat children and adolescents and is passionate about her work with youth and adults in the community.
