Summary
- I am retired Professor of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the University of California Davis, and former Chief of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the VA Northern California Health Care System (retired after 35 years of service with the VA). I am also a Founder of Ultra-Endurance Sports Science & Medicine, a division of the 501(c)(3) non-profit Paramedic Foundation, focused on the enhancement and distribution of scientific and medical knowledge related to participation in ultra-endurance activities. I've published over 150 original scientific papers, mostly related to applied exercise physiology with focus on human locomotion, human performance and proper hydration during prolonged exercise. My clinical activities have involved cardiac rehabilitation, musculoskeletal medicine, sports medicine and medical-legal work. I'm a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and serve on multiple editorial boards. I've been a competitive cross-country skier or distance runner for most of my life, and still enjoy exploring my own limits…..though at a much slower pace than in the past and often with a fly rod in my hand.
