Summary
- Dr. Zucker completed his undergraduate education at McGill University in Montreal and medical school and postgraduate training at Northwestern University. He then joined the faculty at Loyola University in Illinois as one of four attending transplant cardiologists. In 1990 he relocated to Newark Beth Israel Medical Center (NBIMC) in New Jersey to re-establish the heart transplant program at their facility while also joining the faculty at UMDNJ - New Jersey Medical School (now Rutgers) as an Assistant Professor of Medicine. In 2009 he was promoted to Clinical Professor of Medicine.
Under Dr. Zucker’s leadership, the transplant program at NBIMC was ranked among the top ten in volume in the nation from 2009 until 2017, peaking at number 2 in the nation in terms of volume in 2012. The program was recognized as one of only 2 programs in the United States in 2010 with better-than-expected 1-year outcomes and was one of only 12 programs that had performed more than 1,000 transplants by 2017.
Dr. Zucker served as a Board member of the original N.J. Affiliate of the AHA and was a founding member of the Heritage Affiliate (N.Y., N.J. CT, and Long Island) , for which he served on the Board of Directors from 1998 to 2000. He served as President/Governor of the N.J. Chapter of the ACC from 2006 to 2009. In addition, he served as a member of the Board of Directors of the N.J. Sharing Network for more than 15 years (and Chair of their Advisory Board), served three times as the Thoracic Representative for the mid-Atlantic states to UNOS, and as the representative from the ACC’s Board of Governors to the Subcommittee on Heart Failure and Transplantation. Additionally, he was a long-term member of the New Jersey Department of Health’s Cardiovascular Health Advisory Panel and was the Chair of the ABIM Cardiovascular Board Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology Exam Committee from 2017 to 2019. From 2021-23, Dr. Zucker was Chair of the ACCP CV Network
