Summary
- I am a pediatrician, author, and medical educator. I practiced with The Permanente Medical Group in northern California for more than 30 years and recently retired as Director of Pediatrics at the Santa Rosa (CA) Family Medicine Residency.
I've written essays, op-ed pieces, editorials, and letters to the editor on a wide range of topics. My writing has appeared in a number of publications, including The New Yorker, The New York Times, the Chicago Tribune and the San Francisco Chronicle.
My book, Birth Day: A Pediatrician Explores the Science, the History, and the Wonder of Childbirth (Ballantine Books, 2009), received praise from The Washington Post, The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, and The Journal of Midwifery and Women’s Health, and many other publications in the U.S., Europe, and Japan. Birth Day was named a “Notable Bay Area Book of 2009” by the San Francisco Chronicle and was a 2010 Northern California Book Awards finalist. I've spoken on pregnancy and childbirth topics at a number of conferences in the United States, Canada, and Australia.
In 2023 I launched a new blog, "A Moving Disorder: A Parkinson's Journal, and a Bit More", in which I write about my life and experiences with Parkinson's disease. It's an effort to make lemonade out of the lemons life has recently sent my way...
In addition, I have been active in medical education for many years, teaching medical students and family medicine residents from the University of California, San Francisco, where I am a Community Faculty member in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. I also taught pediatrics and reflective writing at the Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency in Santa Rosa, CA, up until my retirement in 2022.
