Dr. Mark E. Fleming, DO, FAAOS, FAOAO, is a highly accomplished orthopedic trauma surgeon, educator, and retired Navy Captain whose career spans over 30 years. Recognized for his contributions to trauma care, education, and research, Dr. Fleming has significantly impacted both military and civilian medicine.
A graduate of Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Fleming completed his orthopedic residency at Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center and a fellowship in Orthopedic Traumatology at the University of Minnesota. His distinguished military career includes serving as Chief of Orthopedic Trauma at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and deploying to Iraq, where he managed complex combat-related injuries. These experiences shaped his groundbreaking research on limb salvage, blast injuries, and infection control, influencing global trauma care standards.
Dr. Fleming’s contributions to resident education are unparalleled. As a Clinical Professor at USC, UNLV, and Walter Reed, he has mentored numerous surgeons and developed innovative programs, including the NTTC Combat Orthopedic Trauma Course. His dedication to teaching earned him the prestigious Orthopedic Teacher of the Year Award (2020).
A prolific researcher, Dr. Fleming has authored over 60 peer-reviewed articles on topics such as regenerative medicine, perioperative care, and trauma reconstruction. His leadership on Department of Defense-funded trials introduced innovations like autologous skin cell sprays and biologic scaffolds, revolutionizing soft tissue and bone repair.
Dr. Fleming has been honored with numerous awards, including the Defense Meritorious Service Medal and Master Clinician’s Award, reflecting his excellence in patient care and research. Currently, he serves as an Orthopedic Trauma Surgeon at Los Angeles General Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA.
