- Dr. Stapfer has been practicing liver and pancreatic surgery for nearly 20 years, building such an outstanding track record that patients have traveled from as far away as Oregon, New Mexico, and Arizona to seek her expertise. She specializes in complex surgical problems, including duodenal perforation and injuries, acute necrotizing pancreatitis, bile duct injuries, and bowel enterocutaneous fistulas. She also has a particular interest in pancreatic cancer, duodenal cancer, neuroendocrine tumors, and cholangiocarcinoma.
In addition to numerous other complex surgeries involving the liver, bile ducts, pancreas, and duodenum, Dr. Stapfer has performed 1100 Whipple and pancreatic surgeries, over 700 liver resections, and over 500 liver transplants. Her experience with liver transplantation has given Dr. Stapfer exceptional proficiency with locally advanced pancreatic cancers that require portal vein and mesenteric artery reconstruction.
In order to offer her patients shorter, more comfortable recoveries, Dr. Stapfer has become highly skilled in robotic/laparoscopic techniques for liver resection and pancreatic surgery.
She is board certified in general surgery, hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, and abdominal organ transplant.
Education and Training
Dr. Stapfer attended the University of Hawaii on a full athletic scholarship, playing basketball for the university while obtaining her degree in biology. She subsequently completed her medical degree at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, now known as Drexel University, where she obtained Alpha Omega Alpha status and graduated cum laude.
Dr. Stapfer completed her general surgery training at The Keck School of Medicine of USC, followed by board certification by the American College of Surgeons in 2003. During her residency, Dr. Stapfer managed to have two healthy children. She then completed a fellowship in hepatobiliary and pancreas surgery followed by an abdominal organ transplant fellowship, both at USC.
