Maria Schmidt, D.N.P., R.N., AGPCNP-BC is a movement disorders nurse practitioner specializing in symptom management for people with atypical Parkinsonian disorders such as progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), corticobasal syndrome (CBS), multiple system atrophy (MSA), and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), as well as Parkinson disease and other neurodegenerative disorders affecting movement and cognitive function.
Maria offers personalized care that combines holistic and non-medication treatments such as music-based rehabilitation, with medication treatments and other therapies.
She helps patients and coordinates care as part of the Johns Hopkins Atypical Parkinsonism Center (also designated as a CurePSP Center of Care) at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and the Johns Hopkins Center for Music as Medicine.
Maria received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Stevenson University in Maryland. She completed her doctorate in Nursing Practice at the University of Maryland School of Nursing. She has over 13 years of clinical experience working in neurology, neurosurgery, otolaryngology, orthopedics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery and palliative care.
She also treats chronic pain resulting from nerve damage with scrambler therapy, a noninvasive way of "resetting" the central nervous system to relieve pain. This therapy is used to treat multiple nerve pain conditions, including chronic intractable back and neck pain, post-laminectomy syndrome, pain after joint replacement, peripheral neuropathy, diabetic neuropathy, postherpetic neuralgia (pain after shingles), lumbar radiculopathy, cervical radiculopathy and central neuropathic pain.
Maria devotes her practice to patient and family-centered care that fosters physical and mental health, wellbeing and quality of life. She is an active member of the CurePSP Patient and Caregiver Advocacy Committee
