- Dr. Margarita Camacho is a cardiac surgeon, with subspecialties in cardiac transplantation and mechanical circulatory support. She graduated from New York Medical College in 1984 and completed her fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine and her transplant/MCS fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic. Her published research covers topics such as heart transplantation and ventricular assist devices, and she has been the surgical Principal Investigator in clinical trials focused on heart assist devices. She has performed 750 heart transplants, over 500 heart procurements and 250 durable devices. Dr. Camacho has served in STS leadership roles including Chair of the Workforce on the Surgical Treatment of End-Stage Cardiopulmonary Disease. She has also served as Quality Director for cardiothoracic surgery for numerous years, successfully spearheading the implementation of innovative techniques for blood conservation, whose outcomes were presented at STS 2025. Dr. Camacho has received several honors, including the Harvey E. Nussbaum Distinguished Service Award from the American Heart Association and multiple recognitions as a Top Doctor by Castle Connolly.
