Summary

  • Margaret Loewen, MD, graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in 2005 and completed four years of her residency in surgery at Corewell Health – Grand Rapids/Michigan State University from 2005 to 2009. Dr. Loewen has a publication on mammographic distance and nipple-areola complex involvement in breast cancer, which was published in the American Journal of Surgery in 2008 and has been cited 40 times.

After leaving her residency program before its completion she began working in Family Medicine at the FQHC called High Plains Community Health Center in Lamar, Colorado. Within a year she was asked to moonlight at Prowers Medical Center's Emergency Department. After completing four years at HPCHC, she began working full-time in the ED as an emergency physician. That soon led to her added assignment as Medical Director of the ED at Prowers Medical Center. She continued in that capacity as an employee of Envision Physician Services until she left PMC at the end of December, 2021 so that she and her husband could return to the midwest to care for their parents.

While practicing in Colorado she had become interested in the treatment for opioid use disorder as a result of the plight of her family's friends and patients in the ED who had become addicted, many of whom died from this disease. She wrote a book titled, "The Picture of Addiction: It Can Happen to Anyone" that came out in August, 2024 though publication by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book is a combination of memoir with community recommendations and algorithms for ED physicians to use when introducing patients in withdrawal to buprenorphine/naloxone (inductions). Research derived, outcomes-based treatment is the answer for people with opioid use disorder.

She recently moved back to Colorado and currently works as an Addictions Medicine Physician at Hope in the Valley/R3 Corp, in Alamosa Colorado.
