- An Atlanta native, Dr. Sonenshine graduated magna cum laude from the University of Georgia in Athens where he received a bachelor’s degree in microbiology and was selected to the Phi Beta Kappa Academic Honor Society. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, where he was named to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He completed both his internship and residency through the Osler Housestaff Training Program at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Following his residency, Dr. Sonenshine completed a fellowship in digestive diseases at Emory University in Atlanta while earning a master of business administration degree from the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia.
In addition to presenting at national and regional events, Dr. Sonenshine has authored various book chapters on topics such as inflammatory bowel disease in females and common upper gastrointestinal surgical procedures. He is a graduate of the 2011 LEAD Atlanta for Young Professionals program and the inaugural 2012 Emerging Leaders Project of the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta. Additionally, he serves on the board of advisors for the Jack and Jill Late Stage Cancer Foundation and volunteers at the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America Camp Oasis for children living with inflammatory bowel disease.
Dr. Sonenshine is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterological Association, the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, and the American Medical Association. His special interests include inflammatory bowel disease, prevention of gastrointestinal malignancy through cost-effective screening, and management of chronic liver disease.
Dr. Sonenshine joined Atlanta Gastroenterology Associates in 2012.
