Summary

  • Dr. Ruffin began academic career in Department of Family Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School. He was the Associate Chair for Research for 12 years leading the department to the top 10 in research funding. He was the inaugural holder of the Dr. Max and Buena Lichter Research Professorship in Family Medicine. He was voted into the Michigan Research League of Excellence in 2014.

The main focus of Dr. Ruffin’s research is cancer prevention and early detection. He began his research funding with a KO7 Career Development Award from NCI focused on practice transformation in the 1990’s. He has had a series of RO1’s focused on colorectal cancer prevention. His research team demonstrated that a single daily dose of aspirin could have long term biological changes in the colon tissue that explained the observational data of aspiring protecting one from colorectal cancer. He was a member of NCI Early Detection Research Network for colorectal cancer. This has led to an ongoing large validation study of new early detection biomarkers for colorectal cancer in serum, urine, and stool. His current research is focused in stool microbiome as a new early detection biomarker for colorectal cancer. He partnered with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention to refine and test an automated system to collect and process family health history. With support from the State of Michigan, he developed an interactive shared decision tool to help patients determined their preferred method of getting checked for colorectal cancer.

In September 2016, Dr. Ruffin joined Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Penn State College of Medicine as Chair and Professor of Family & Community Medicine. He is the holder of the The Hershey Company Professor and Dr. and Mrs. Forney George Fellowship. He now leads over 100 faculty in 15 clinical sites, two residency programs, and two fellowships.
