  • Since joining the Department of Pathology at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Dr. Chirieac research has significantly impacted the fields of mesothelioma and lung cancer.
    Through systematic investigation, his research has uncovered new concepts regarding the diagnosis, pathogenesis, and molecular characterization of pleural mesothelioma and distinct subtypes of mesothelioma.
    As part of an interdisciplinary scientific group at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Dr. Chirieac has also contributed to significant interdisciplinary research collaborations that have expanded our understanding of mesothelioma and lung cancer. These endeavors have resulted in publications of landmark papers in leading medical journals like Nature, Nature Medicine, Nature Genetics, Cell, Cancer Discovery, and Journal of Clinical Oncology.
    Dr. Chirieac has also written many reviews and chapters on the diagnosis and pathogenesis of mesothelioma and lung carcinomas. He authored or co-authored multiple chapters in the 4th edition of the World Health Organization Classification of Tumors of the Lung, Pleura, Thymus and Heart, including chapters on mesothelioma, Nuclear Protein of the Testis carcinoma, lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma, and rare unclassified lung tumors.
    Over the years, he has been passionately involved in mentoring. His trainees have presented at numerous meetings, have published the work in distinguished journals, and have won prestigious awards.
    He is dedicated to the investigation of pulmonary malignancies, translating histologic and genomic findings from research to clinical practice, therefore improving the diagnosis and treatment of patients with these malignancies, not only at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, but around the world. He enjoys teaching diagnostic pathology to trainees and colleagues and strives to model new generations of academic and practicing surgical pathologists into the future.
