Summary
- Clinical Interests/Research
Leonard Milstone, MD, a Professor Emeritus of Dermatology at Yale, follows a large group of patients with ichthyosis and other genetic disorders of keratinization. These patients have stimulated a number of collaborative studies of genotype-phenotype correlations, trials of novel treatments for those diseases, and analysis of local and systemic effects of retinoids.
Laboratory Research
He studies the structure and function of epidermal keratinocytes and their proteins in vitro, in experimental animals, and in patients with ichthyosis. Past work includes: discovery of interferon gamma; identification and characterization of keratins 4 and 13; identification and characterization of epican, the CD44 proteoglycan unique to stratified squamous epithelia; elucidation of the genetic cause of ichthyosis with confetti; demonstration that epidermal desquamation can be harnessed to remove systemic toxins from the body; delivery of small nucleotides to epidermis for the purpose of gene editing
