Overview of Dr. Cherian
Laurel J. Cherian, MD, MS, FAAN is an associate professor in the Department of Neurological Sciences at Rush University Medical Center. She also serves as Assistant Dean of Medical Student Affairs, Advising for Rush Medical College; Director of Research for the Division of Cerebrovascular Diseases; Medical Director of the Transient Ischemic Attack Observation Unit; and Vice President of the Illinois State Neurological Society. She has previously served as the Vascular Neurology Fellowship Director and the Secretary/Treasurer of the Illinois State Neurological Society. Cherian received her medical degree from Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine of Medicine in Maywood, IL. She completed neurology residency at The University of Chicago and a vascular neurology fellowship at Rush University Medical Center. In addition to her clinical practice, she has completed a Master of Science degree in clinical research, and works on several NIH-funded trials, studying the effects of nutrition on vascular pathology and post-stroke functional, cognitive, and mental health outcomes, with work that has been published in a variety of scientific journals and featured in media coverage including NPR, The Wall Street Journal, ABC news, Good Morning America, FOX news, and The Atlantic. She is a member of the American Heart Association and the American Academy of Neurology and is board-certified in neurology with a subspecialty certification in vascular neurology. Her clinical interests include acute stroke interventions, cerebral amyloid angiopathy, lifestyle modification, and post-stroke cognition.
