Summary

  • My research and teaching interests arose early in my career and focused strongly on cross cultural medicine and culturally grounded models of primary mental health care in Arab countries. My first Fulbright Scholarship in 2003-04 served as a nidus for our textbook on cultural models of health care in the Middle East. This text sparked much regional culturally grounded research and other scholarly activity in response to its publication. My subsequent work in the region included health care consultancies for projects with the World Bank and the Jordanian Ministry of Planning, and led to further regional studies and collaborations. I also held leadership positions in the flagship medical school of the United Arab Emirates, and interfaced with Governmental and local health systems during a time of major change of the health system and medical school structure. I have continued to carry out research and lecture frequently in the region. My second Fulbright Scholarship in 2019-2020 was focused on studying medical humanities in Arab countries, and exploring models to integrate this discipline into medical schools in the region. I have also served as a volume editor of the last two ( 7th-2018 and 8th- 2022) editions of “Taylors’ Principles and Practice of Family Medicine” which is internationally recognized as the standard reference textbook for Family Medicine. I currently serve as the Lead Editor for the upcoming 9th Edition of Taylors'
