Summary

  • Over the past 20 years, I been involved with basic science, clinical and translational research at several institutions. As an academic otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeon, I active clinically/surgically with both pediatric and adult patients. I have been an author on >100 published manuscripts and book chapters, and >100 presentations at scientific meetings which have earned several national and international awards. Since 2012, I have served a leadership role on the American Academy of Pediatrics National Button Battery Committee and contributed to several clinical practice guideline and industry safety changes. I served as Chair of the Pediatric Otolaryngology Advisory Council for the American College of Surgeon’s National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Pediatric. My current primary research focuses include: injury prevention, medical device innovation, patient safety and quality improvement. I serve as medical director of the Global Injury Research Collaborative (GIRC) is a nonprofit medical research organization, committed to gathering unique cumulative data on aerodigestive foreign bodies and caustic injuries from around the world. I have done product safety educational lectures to help make consumer products safer from an ingestion and aspiration risk standpoint. I have helped develop novel medical devices to help optimize patient safety and reduce preventable harm.
