Summary
- I practiced primary care for 43y in HMO, small & large independent groups and the last 25y in my small practice with 2 other providers. I boarded in Family Medicine, Pediatrics and HIV Medicine with Fellowships in the 1st 2 specialties. I was drafted in 1966, attached to the Marines in Viet Nam as an anesthesiologist in a field hospital, responsible for a portable 3 provider hospital and charge physician for the medical civilian aid program (MEDCAP). Extended 6m to become the 1st Marine Division's medical trouble shooter. My final 2y were at the Philadelphia Naval Hosp managing subacute amputee wards and directing the emergency department. Successfully established amputee swim, basketball and skiing clubs.
Have served on innumerable non-profit boards of directors in the greater SF Bay area & Midwest providing human health services. Included was the gay-lesbian physician group in SF charged with enabling the many services needed plus consulting for the CDC activation of their HIV/AIDS programming. I served as director of SFPHD's HIV/AIDS clinic from 1982-89 in the Castro District - epicenter of the pandemic. As a governor appointee, I represented NCA on the 1st State AIDS Board.I continue as a volunteer physician at the 40y Berkeley Free Clinic and a local Rotary Club mobile clinic for undocumented immigrants.
Past 5y have commanded disproportionate time to manage the chronic inflammatory condition and dysfunctional immune system from Agent Orange exposure that activated shortly after my Viet Nam tour.
