Summary
- Since my early education, I have been devoted to helping individuals recover from substance use disorders and severe psychiatric disorders. Holding both clinical and research positions simultaneously, has given me a unique advantage in developing treatments that not only result in good outcomes, but that also are easily integrated within treatment settings and have high patient acceptance. Through my Community Research and Recovery Program (CRRP) that is based on the Community Reinforcement Approach (CRA), I conduct studies and programs that focus on reducing patients’ psychiatric and substance abuse symptoms by making changes in their daily environment to promote healthier lifestyles. My programs promote the development of innovative approaches that challenge belief systems about limits on patients’ capabilities to improve treatments, reduce associated stigma, and consequently provide environments where persons are more likely to adhere to treatments that match their particular goals in life. I have been an active National Committee Member of the NIDA MDRU’s Clinical Methods Committee and Psychosocial Treatments Committee and the NIDA CTN Assessment and Measures Committee and Training Subcommittee. In addition, I have been active on local committees to safeguard the protection of subjects in research trials, ensure quality research methodology, and promote psychosocial rehabilitation services. I have benefited from holding a wide array of positions within research and have managed national multi-site trials to single-site open pilots and have been sought to be a key contributor on national initiatives to develop standardized procedures in measurement and design and integration of behavioral treatments in clinical trials. I have received funding for behavioral therapies development from multiple sources including NIDA and NIAAA as well as has received funding from other federal and state agencies for behavioral treatment research.
