Summary
- Karl B. Fields is the founder and emeritus Director of the Cone Health System Sports Medicine Fellowship in Greensboro, North Carolina. He is a Professor for the Department of Family Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Fields is Board Certified in Family Medicine and holds his Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine.
Dr. Fields is a past-President, a charter member and a charter Fellow of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine. He teaches sports medicine with AMSSM, the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Academy of Family Physicians. He has been a visiting Professor of Sports Medicine in Australia, England, Canada, China, Chile, Italy, South Africa, Qatar, Turkey, and Norway. He is the editor in chief for the Sports Medicine section of UpToDate.
His research focuses on running injuries, orthotics, home rehabilitation interventions and tendinopathy. He also is active in teaching, curriculum development and case based research in the use of musculoskeletal diagnostic ultrasound in sports medicine. He currently teaches diagnostic ultrasound. He has extensive publications in the field of sports medicine.
Dr. Fields spent many years as a team physician. He has provided medical coverage for the US Figure Skating Championships on 3 occsions as well as the Olympic Marathon trials, U.S. Cross Country Championships, Marine Corps Marathon, Ironman Triathlon Championships, US Gymnastics Championships and American Cup Gymnastics and numerous other sporting events.
Dr. Fields was awarded a B.A. degree in classical civilization from Yale University and an MD degree from the University of Kentucky. He completed his Family Medicine Residency at Charlotte Memorial Hospital and an Academic Fellowship at the University of North Carolina.
