- Dr. Bilimoria is a nationally recognized surgical oncologist, researcher, and physician executive. He is focused on building large, innovative and collaborative programs to improve care, research, and education; mentoring other surgeons and trainees to achieve their goals; and creating a culture of improvement, collaboration, and innovation.
Dr. Bilimoria is the Chair of the Department of Surgery and the Jay Grosfeld Professor of Surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine. His clinical practice focuses on melanoma and sarcoma. He is the founding director of the Surgical Outcomes and Quality Improvement Center (SOQIC), which was recently relocated to Indiana University. His research focuses on surgical and oncologic outcomes, quality improvement, medical education, and health policy. He is also the system Vice President for Surgical Quality at Indiana University Health.
A respected thought leader in clinical quality measurement and improvement, Dr. Bilimoria was listed as one of the “Top 50 Experts Leading the Field of Patient Safety” in the U.S. He is passionate about mentorship and training of junior faculty and residents, having been recognized as the Mentor of the Year by Northwestern in 2020. He is a past president of the Association of Academic Surgery (largest organization of academic surgeons) and of the Surgical Outcomes Club. He has held several national leadership positions, including president and board positions for national surgical, oncology, and research societies.
Dr. Bilimoria is the founding director of the Illinois Surgical Quality Improvement Collaborative (ISQIC), a learning collaborative of 56 Illinois hospitals working together to improve healthcare quality. Dr. Bilimoria led the FIRST Trial, a national trial at 151 hospitals, which prompted a major national policy change in 2017. He now co-leads the SECOND Trial, a 215-hospital national trial seeking to improve physician well-being and mistreatment.
