    Dr. Gutierrez attended UC Berkeley undergraduate and Columbia University for his MS. He earned his MD at Mount Sinai in New York City and concluded his training in gastroenterology at UCSD and transplant hepatology at the University of Miami. Dr. Gutierrez has held multiple academic and leaderships positions, including Director of Hepatobiliary Malignancies at University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHSCSA)/Texas Liver Institute and Medical Director of the Liver Transplant Program at St. Vincent Medical Center. He is also former Assistant Professor of Medicine at UTHSCSA and UCSD.

    Research is another passion of Dr. Gutierrez’ and he has over 90 peer-reviewed publications in the field of liver disease. Initially, Dr. Gutierrez was trained in molecular virology by Dr. Andrea Branch and as an T32 NIH fellow at UCSD. He also participated in the HCV landmark clinical trials while at the Texas Liver Institute using Direct Acting Antivirals (DAAs). Currently, Dr. Gutierrez is Principal Investigator on early phase studies of NASH and oversees the national screening campaign "NASH PASS."
