Overview of Dr. Bauman
I am Professor of Medicine and Chief of Hematology/Oncology at the University of Arizona-College of Medicine-Tucson, Deputy Director of the University of Arizona Cancer Center (UAzCC), and Medical Director of the Oncology Service Line at Banner University Medicine-Tucson. I am a medical oncologist with expertise in the prevention and treatment of head and neck cancer. Because it arises in the mouth, throat, voice box, and base of the skull, head and neck cancer profoundly affects critical human functions, including speaking, eating, and breathing. I work with a comprehensive multidisciplinary team specialized in head and neck cancer to assure the best possible cancer outcomes and quality of life for our patients. For over a decade, my overarching career vision has been to develop scientifically rigorous clinical trials to prevent or improve outcomes in head and neck cancer. I lead multiple national and international clinical trials evaluating new treatments, with focus on the new modality of immunotherapy (treatments that activate the immune system to fight cancer). I am also the co-Principal Investigator of the UAzCC National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Prevention Clinical Trials Network. I received a dual MD/MPH degree from Tufts University in 1999, earning the Dameshek Award in Internal Medicine, election to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, and the MD/MPH Academic Achievement Award. I completed Residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Utah in 2003 and Fellowship in Medical Oncology at the University of Washington in 2006, where I served as Chief Fellow. I received the NCI Clinical Investigator Team Leadership Award in 2011. I am the Co-Chair of the NCI Cancer Prevention Steering Committee and a member of the Previously Untreated Locally Advanced Task Force of the NCI Head and Neck Cancer Steering Committee.
