Summary

  • In late 2008, while in the midst of contemplating my post-residency career plans, a physician took a chance and offered me what would become the opportunity of a lifetime. Fast forward 8 months later and I'm in Houston, TX preparing to move to Gaborone, Botswana as a member of the Baylor College of Medicine's Pediatric AIDS Corps. In a mere 2 weeks, I was required to transform myself from a fledgling general pediatrician into an HIV specialist. AZT, 3TC, d4T...what were these medications, how was I supposed to use them, and how on earth could I convince families that I was an "expert?" I failed the pre-test, passed the post-test, and discovered my passion during the final exam...a year of living, breathing, learning, and teaching HIV medicine in Sub-Saharan Africa. My life changed as did my career trajectory. A Skype interview from my living room in Botswana led to a rigorous and transformative 3-year fellowship program at Emory University in Pediatric Infectious Diseases. Atlanta is home to one of the largest pediatric and adolescent HIV programs in the nation and it was there that I discovered that one need not travel across the world to witness the brutality of the HIV epidemic. While perinatal transmission has become a relative rarity here in the U.S. owing to exemplary medical and public health interventions, horizontal transmission remains a constant and our adolescents are most vulnerable and at highest risk of acquiring infection, the face of the "new" epidemic. Following fellowship graduation in the summer of 2014, I accepted the challenge to continue pursuing my academic path at the University of Chicago. Working with a team of outstanding, dedicated, and passionate individuals, we aim to make an impact in at-risk communities through outreach, prevention, and linkage-to-care efforts, bringing confidential and comprehensive services to those most at need in the greater Chicagoland area.
