Summary
- I am a board certified neonatologist and currently serve as the Marvin I. Gottlieb, M.D., Ph.D. Chair of Pediatrics and Physician-in-Chief, Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center. I am also the Clinical Director of Hackensack Meridian Health Children’s Care Transformation Service. Prior to assuming this role in 2018, I served as University Chair of Pediatrics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Physician-in-Chief at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore in the Bronx, NY. (2013-2018) and Director of Neonatology at Vanderbilt (2004-2013). I am a NIH-funded physician-scientist with both laboratory-based and patient-oriented, translational research programs that focus on improving the respiratory outcomes of infants and children. My research bridges bench to bedside investigations, from mechanistic studies of altered signaling in the neonatal pulmonary circulation in animal models to large multi-center studies involving recruitment and long-term follow up of preterm and term cohorts. I have been continuously funded by the NIH since 1998 and have served as PI on grants funded by NHLBI, NIEHS and NICHD. Throughout my career, I have had two main areas of research focus: (1) neonatal lung diseases and their long-term impact on lung health in preterm and term-born infants and (2) environmental health and neurodevelopment, particularly trace metal exposures from neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) feeding practices. I am currently the co-PI with Susan Teitelbaum, PhD at Mount Sinai on the 15-site NIH-supported study called “Developmental Impact of NICU Exposures (DINE; 1UH3OD023320)” which is part of the larger Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) program. I hold faculty appointments as Professor of Pediatrics at the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine at Seton Hall University and at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Adjunct Professor of Pediatrics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
