- Juan Mezzich, MD PhD, is a psychiatrist based in Manhattan, NY. He completed his residency in psychiatry at Ohio State University Hospital from 1971 to 1974 after graduating from Cayetano Heredia Peruvian University School of Medicine in 1971. He completed in 1975 a Ph D in Mathematical Psychology at the Ohio State University and Stanford University. He initiated at that time his faculty career at Stanford and then, from 1978 to 1995 at the University of Pittsburgh, where he raised from assistant professor to full professor and conducted NIMH granted validation studies on psychiatric diagnostic systems and chaired an NIMH-supported program on Culture and Diagnosis related to his work as a member of the American Psychiatric Association's DSM-IV Task Force. He has been since 1995 a tenured professor of psychiatry at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, and more recently also a professor of global health at the same institution. He was president of the World Psychiatric Association from 2005 to 2008. At that time he founded an Institutional Program on Psychiatry for the Persona, which was extended in 2009 into an International College of Person Centered Medicine in collaboration with the World Medical Association, World Health Organization and other global and academic institutions. His publications include studies on diagnosis and classification, culture, epidemiology and health systems.
