Summary

  • Dr. Joshua Feder studied mathematical modeling of brain function (Magna Cum Laude) and medicine (Cum Laude) at Boston University, followed by Psychiatry training at Naval Regional Medical Center San Diego. He served during the Gulf War while completing a child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, later becoming Chief of Child Psychiatry at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD.

    Dr. Feder co-authored the first AACAP Practice Parameter on Autism, serves as Co-Chair of AACAP’s Disaster & Trauma Committee, and helped define Developmental Relationship-Based Care. He was founding policy chair for the California Association for Infant Mental Health and advocates globally on access to care, climate policy, and peacebuilding. He spoke at the 78th UN General Assembly on children’s rights in conflict zones, launching Foundations for a Peaceful World (2023). His work supports children and families affected by conflict in Northern Ireland, the Balkans, and the Middle East, as well as asylum seekers in California. His latest book, Supporting the Mental Health of Migrant Children, Youth, and Families (2024), stems from his work with AACAP’s Resource Group on Youth at the Border.

    Now practicing in Solana Beach, CA, Dr. Feder is Executive Medical Director at Positive Development, supporting families using relationship-based care. His research spans UCSD, SDSU, Fielding Graduate University, An Najah National University, the Inclusion Is antibullying program, and the International Networking Group on Peace Building with Young Children, working on projects in the US, Northern Ireland, and the Middle East.

    As Editor in Chief at The Carlat Child Psychiatry Report, Dr. Feder co-authored The Child Medication Fact Book for Psychiatric Practice (2023) and Prescribing Psychotropics (2021), guiding responsible medication use. An internationally recognized educator, his webinars and podcast team have nearly 5 million downloads.
