- Dr. Joseph O'Neill, based in Washington DC specializes in internal medicine with a subspecialty in hospice and palliative medicine. He completed his medical degree at the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine in 1985, followed by a residency in internal medicine at the University of Washington. He also holds degrees in medical sciences, business administration and public health from the University of California at Berkeley. He later pursued a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine at Johns Hopkins University in 2014-2015. Dr. ONeill retired as an attending physician at the NIH Clinical Center. His professional expertise includes hospice and palliative care, HIV/AIDS, general internal medicine, and global health. He served as the national AIDS czar in the George W Bush White House and was credited by President Bush as the “architect” of his PEPFAR initiative that has supported HIV care in Africa and other parts of the world and has, to date, saved 25 million lives. Prior to that he directed the Ryan White CARE Program that supports AIDS care in the United States. He has contributed to several publications, with notable work on HIV/AIDS palliative care and end-of-life services. Dr. O'Neill received the AOA Honor from the University of Washington in 2009.
