  • Dr. Alvernia is an American Board Certified Neurosurgeon, internationally educated and trained. He specializes in spine conditions, brain tumors and nerve disorders. After graduating with honors from medical school, Dr. Alvernia completed his second neurosurgical residency at Tulane Medical School in New Orleans, Louisiana. Additionally, Dr. Alvernia completed a neurosurgical residency (Valedictorian) in Bogota, Colombia. From 2001-2003 he completed a fellowship in skull base and brain tumors in Lyon, France, training under the world renowned Dr. Marc Sindou.

    Prior to entering Tulane Medical School and completing his neurosurgical residency, Dr. Alvernia studied microsurgery-neuroanatomy as a research fellow at the University of Illinois in Peoria, Illinois. He also served on the teaching faculty of this university. During his neurosurgical residency at Tulane Medical School, Dr. Alvernia operated both at Tulane Medical Center and Charity Hospital. As was the case with most medical personnel, Dr. Alvernia was evacuated to Houston, Texas during Hurricane Katrina to work in his field of training at Ben Taub Hospital, Texas Children’s Hospital, and the Veteran’s Administration Hospital.

    Dr. Alvernia has worked for the past seven years in Northeast Louisiana and was honored with the 2015, 2017 and 2018 Health Care Heroes/Neurosurgeon Award for Northeast Louisiana. He currently holds an appointment as Associated faculty at Neurosurgery Department at the University of Mississippi where he teaches the Neurosurgery residents on monthly bases.

    He has written more than 40 publications in international peer review journals as well as several chapters in Neurosurgery textbooks. In addition, he serves as an ad hoc reviewer or editor for national and international neurosurgery journals and neurosurgery books. Dr. Alvernia is fluent in English, Spanish, and French.
