Summary
- I am a board-certified, highly experienced psychiatrist with particular expertise in dealing with treatment-resistant conditions My approach includes attention to a patient's feelings about treatment and its possible impact on his/her identity and goals. Though working with conventional psychiatric medications, I pay special attention to evidence-based augmentation strategies and when clinically appropriate and data-supported. I also advise about other measures including nutraceuticals and life-style that may complement or reduce the need for conventional drugs.
I am sensitive to individual and cultural differences, spent several years studying cross-cultural psychiatric issues in Thailand. I also developed and ran programs for intensive outpatient treatment, panic disorder, and treatment-resistant bipolar illness, founded and expanded Adult Psychiatry clinical rotation for Stanford residents at Kaiser-Permanente in Santa Clara. My psychotherapeutic position is flexible but rooted in existential issues, and included certification in Clinical Philosophy (a type of existential psychotherapy), which I find often helpful dealing with patient resistance and adherence to treatment plans
Areas of special interest and competence include:
Management of treatment-refractory problems including mind-body issues with complex or uncommon presentations;
Treating mood and anxiety disorders, especially bipolar and treatment resistant
Diagnosing and treating adult attention deficit disorder;
Optimizing treatment regimens, including integration of pharmacologic with nutraceutical agents;
Reconciling the implications of biologic treatment with issues of meaning, philosophy and purpose important to individual patients
