He earned his medical degree from the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences in 1984 and completed his internal medicine training at Marshfield Clinic. Dr. Allen has been a professor at the University of North Dakota and its School of Medicine and Health Sciences since 1999 and served as the founding Director of the SIM-ND Statewide Mobile Simulation program. He previously practiced at Unimed and Trinity Health Systems in Minot, ND where he was the founding medical director of a rotor-wing air ambulance program. He was an attending physician at Altru Health System until 2021 when he retired from. medical practice. He continued in medical education until 2024. His recent publications focus on diagnostic clinical reasoning and training tools in medical education. Dr. Allen is recognized for his role as principal investigator on a significant grant for a mobile simulation program and holds a CMS Meaningful Use Stage 1 Certification.
