Summary

  • Dr. John Kelly Smith, M.D. received his B.A. from Cornell University, Ithaca, New York in 1957 and his M.D. from Cornell College of Medicine in 1960. He did his internal medicine residency on the Cornell Division of Medicine, Bellevue Hospital, New York, from 1960 to 1964 taking his third year as a NIH fellow with Professor Jan Waldenstrom in Malmo Sweden. He was Chief Resident during his fourth year of residency and went on active duty as Captain in the United States Army Medical Corps from 1964-1966 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He was fellow in Infectious Diseases at Cornell Medical College from 1966-1969 and served as Chief of the Divisions of Infectious Diseases and Allergy-Immunology at Northshore University Hospital until 1979. He was board certified in Internal Medicine in 1969, Infectious Diseases in 1972, Allergy and Immunology in 1974, and Geriatric Medicine in 1990.
    Dr. Smith came to ETSU in 1979 as Chief of Medicine Veteran Affairs Medical Center, Associate Chairman of Internal Medicine, and Chief of the Divisions of Infectious Diseases, Allergy Immunology and Geriatrics. From 1981 to 1988 he was Chair of Internal Medicine, and from 1988 to 2001 he held the Chair of Excellence in Medicine. He served as director of the Neuroscience Course, the Immunology Course, Practicing Medicine, the elective in Advanced Physical Diagnosis (2003 to present), and edits the College of Medicine’s Medical Mystery site. In 1993 Dr. Smith was appointed Laureate, Tennessee Chapter of the American College of Physicians. He is a recipient of the American Association of Medical Colleges Humanism in Medicine Award. He is author or co-author of 120 journal articles, 112 abstracts, and 6 book chapters and has made over 155 presentations at various medical/scientific meetings. Dr. Smith is a recipient of the 2012 and 2015 SPD Popular Writing awards given by the Solar Physics Division of the American Astronomical Society for articles written in Sky & Telescope.
